Sunset

Isn't this just an awesome sunset? The lake truly is a wonderful place to have a vacation!

metamorphosis of a critter

OK, so we're sitting on the deck Wednesday afternoon (yeah, I know, the dates on the camera were WRONGO!) and this bug crawled out of the ground and across the grass. So, being the curious bunch that we are, I grabbed a stick, had it crawl up it, and placed it on the deck so we could examine it a little closer. It was weird! The shell was hard, and he had claws! We then put him in a planter so we could watch and see what he did. As the day goes on, we notice that he's shedding his skin. As he came out of the original skin, the thing grew and grew! He was 3 times his original size (nice, I'm assuming it's a he!). And...he grew wings. Wing span of oh, let's say 8" (really, about 1" but he looked huge!) He hung around until Thursday morning, when we last observed him. Sometime during the day, he flew away. Hmmmm....wonder where he went! We were hoping not inside the cottage, as we kept the doors wide open for the dogs. It would be a shame to have to kill him (which would definitely happen if he went inside!) after watching him evolve! **Thanks to Jack "the bug man" Ball, the bug has been identified as a cicada!**

Naming a blog....

...is harder than I thought. So, I asked my wonderful coworkers to help me. With titles like "Streaming with Sue," "The UNfowench," and "Catablog," the choices were unique & funny and finally I picked two! Thanks Matt, Sue & Gail! However, I am hoping that should people stumble upon my blog they don't think I'm really into knives or anything like that!!

It all began when I informed my coworkers at a round table meeting (also known as the lunch table) that I kept a big butcher knife beside my bed. Well, I lived alone. My dogs are small. Doesn't a person deserve to sleep in peace? hehehe I'll never live that down! Hence the title of this blog. Love it!

Texas Horseshoes

Every year, my uncle rents a cottage on Keuka Lake and the whole crew comes (my mother's side of the family). We eat my Uncle John's excellent cooking, visit with cousins we haven't seen in a year and have a load of fun. We also play Texas Horseshoes. My cousin's rules are like this: winners get $1.00 each and the losers chug a beer and then jump in the lake. Very fun....you have two teams, tossing three washers (well, we use electrical tape - easier to throw and since tape comes in different colors - it's easier to tell who threw what, and....well....
we just do) into three holes cut out of the boards. I didn't bring any money (of course), so my uncles both spotted me the money. I lost both games, but was fortunate enough to not have to do anything besides paying the money! Here's a picture of my cousin and brother-in-law playing. Today, Kurt built us a Texas Horseshoes game. I am not very good at this game, and my team only won one game out of approximately 10, but we had a great time. But we're going to practice so we can win next year at the lake!

Yesterday, we had a surprise 18th birthday party for my niece Kaitlin. She was so surprised! It was so special. She had 4 of her friends come over and they had loads of fun! Here's a picture I snapped as she came inside the house. Priceless!
